Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the City of Alton has received a $225,000 Operation Weed and Seed grant through the U.S. Department of Justice. The Weed and Seed program uses a community-based approach to combat violent crime, drug use, and gang activity in high-crime areas. This award is the fifth grant for this project.
"We know that community policing is a proven crime fighting approach," said Costello, a former law enforcement official. "By reducing crime we are not only making our neighborhoods safer, we are making economic development possible."
