WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today in response to the announcement of a settlement between the U.S. Department of Education and Nelnet, Inc., a student lender:
"This year, the Education and Labor Committee will review the federal student loan programs to ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used efficiently and effectively. The Committee will also specifically review the settlement agreement between the Education Department and Nelnet and the events leading up to that agreement. The single purpose of the federal student loan programs is simple: to help students and families pay for college. We will ensure that taxpayer dollars are used properly, with this single purpose in mind."
