ANNAPOLIS, MD – This morning in Annapolis Rep. Frank Kratovil visited with First Congressional District state lawmakers and Maryland Secretary of Transportation John Porcari to discuss local transportation priorities and job creation throughout the First District.

Kratovil’s visit comes just before the U.S. House of Representatives prepares to begin discussions and debate on an economic stimulus package.  Both House leaders and President-Elect Obama have stated that investments in transportation infrastructure will be a central focus of this stimulus.  The package is also expected to include extensive tax cuts for small businesses and individuals as well as investments in renewable energy, education, and rural broadband.

Kratovil said he appreciated the chance to discuss the stimulus package with local lawmakers and hear their thoughts about infrastructure projects that would most benefit their shared constituencies.

“The last stimulus package did little to revive our economy.  If Congress wants to get serious about getting our economy on track, we need to focus on job creation and tax cuts,” said Kratovil.  “When it comes to transportation and infrastructure, it is critical that we work closely with state and local officials to ensure that taxpayer funds are going to the most critical projects with the greatest potential for job creation and regional economic development.  Congress doesn’t have all the answers; we need to work across party lines and work closely with state leaders to make sure we’re getting the most out of any potential stimulus package.”
