Release from Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin
HERSETH SANDLIN STATEMENT ON STATE OF THE UNION Washington D.C., January 28, 2008 – Rep. Herseth Sandlin issued the following statement this afternoon outlining what she hopes to hear in President Bush’s final State of the Union address to Congress tonight. “I’m looking forward to hearing the president discuss his priorities this evening during his final State of the Union Address. Clearly, there are a number of important issues on the table but as I’ve traveled South Dakota this past week, the issue at the forefront of many South Dakotans’ minds right now is the economic stimulus package. We have seen a great example of bipartisan compromise between Congressional leaders and the White House, and this kind of cooperation and shared sense of urgency serves our nation well. Tonight, I anticipate hearing the president’s full support for moving this simple and clean package quickly. I also expect quick passage in the House tomorrow, and I hope that the bill doesn’t get derailed in the Senate so that we can give our economy the jumpstart it needs. “Another issue that I’m hopeful the President will address – and that we can see bipartisan compromise on – is the Farm Bill. Last weekend I attended both the Sioux Empire Farm and Home Show in Sioux Falls and the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo in Rapid City, and the farmers and ranchers I talked to don’t care to hear about partisan battles or political games. Given that the bill is so popular among producers, it’s been extremely disappointing to hear veto threats from USDA. So I also hope that President Bush would use his speech tonight to encourage a swift, bipartisan compromise on the bill, and that he will ultimately back off his veto threat. “Finally, given the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and instability in Israel, Pakistan, and Iran, I look forward to hearing President Bush's long-term strategy for the dealing with the difficult problems facing the U.S. throughout the Middle East.” Rep. Herseth Sandlin will attend this evening’s State of the Union Address, which begins at 9:00 pm EST and is held in the House of Representatives chamber of the United States Capitol building. ###
