Today, the St. Petersburg Times published the following op-ed by Senator Dodd on the costal insurance crisis. Senator Dodd is the Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee.


In the last few years, home and business owners on America's coasts weathered the worst that nature can offer. And now, many of those who endured are being driven away - not by wind and rain, but by the unbearable cost of insurance.

In light of the hardships facing homeowners and businesses in coastal regions to insure themselves against hurricanes and other natural disasters, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, today convened a hearing entitled “An Examination of the Availability and Affordability of Property and Casualty Insurance in the Gulf Coast and Other Coastal Regions.”

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, announced today in New Orleans that he will hold a hearing on the impact that Katrina and other natural catastrophes have had on the availability and affordability of insurance for families and businesses in the Gulf Coast and other coastal regions across the country.  Chairman Dodd will examine the current practices of the insurance industry, specifically the claims processed post-Katrina and the industry’s ability to insure customers from future natural disasters.

 


2/28/07: Senator Dodd Examines Terrorism Risk Insurance Act

Encourages a More Permanent Law to Protect Americans and U.S. Economy from Acts of Terrorism

As part of his overarching goal to improve the nation’s security and prosperity, Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) today convened a hearing on the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA).  Chairman Dodd highlighted the effectiveness of the law and urged his colleagues to adopt a more permanent program to provide a federal backstop against catastrophic losses in the property and casualty insurance marketplace associated with massive terrorism damages.  TRIA was originally passed by Congress and signed into law after 9/11, and is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2007. 


6/15/06: Sen. Dodd Co-Sponsors Bill Protecting Armed Service Members from Fraudulent Financial Services Practices

Washington, D.C. – Recognizing that the members of our country’s Armed Services should not be preyed upon by unscrupulous and dishonest financial service providers, Senator Chris Dodd yesterday supported a bill which would enact stricter standards by which some insurers and other financial service companies market their life insurance and securities products to servicemen and -women and require full disclosure by the representatives about their product.

WASHINGTON, D. C. - The Senate Banking Committee today announced an agreement on legislation that will extend the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act. The bipartisan bill is the result of a collaboration among Banking Committee Chairman Shelby, Senator Dodd, Senator Bennett and Ranking Member Sarbanes. A date for the mark-up of the bill will be announced shortly.
