Congressman Dent praises commutation of sentence for Border Patrol agents

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15), a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, today issued the following statement upon President Bush’s commuting the prison sentences of U.S. Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, whom Congressman Dent believes were too harshly punished for wounding a drug suspect:

“I am grateful that Agents Ramos and Compean will not serve out the excessive prison sentences imposed upon them. These men were acting in fulfillment of their duty and responsibility as U.S. Border Patrol Agents to protect our borders and enforce the law. They have served just over two years of the eleven and twelve year sentences. To have them spend another decade in prison is unjust.”

Congressman Dent sent a letter to President Bush in December requesting that he conduct a thorough review of the case against the Agents and seriously consider exercising his power of executive clemency to pardon them. As a result of the President’s action today, Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean will be released from prison in the coming months.
