Passports Required for all International Travel Beginning June 1, 2009

New passport card can be used for some North American travel

Effective June 1, 2009, U.S. citizens must present a valid U.S. passport book, the new U.S. passport card, or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security when entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land border crossings or seaports-of-entry.

Passport Card
The new wallet-sized passport card is valid for 10 years for an adult and five years for individuals under 16.

The passport card costs $45 for a first-time adult passport applicant and $35 for minor applicants under 16. Adults who already have a fully valid passport book may apply for the card as a passport renewal by mail for $20. Note: The U.S. Passport Card cannot be used for international air travel.

It currently takes approximately four weeks from the date of application to receive your passport book or passport card.
