Sutton Statement on Great Lakes Compact Being Signed into Law
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, President George W. Bush Signed the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact into law. Congresswoman Betty Sutton helped lead the effort to pass the Compact through the House of Representatives. She released the following statement:
"This is a great victory for the Great Lakes and for Ohio. I was very proud to lead the Compact's passage through the U.S. House of Representatives. This Compact is now Federal law and will ensure that the Great Lakes will be protected for future generations by preventing unnecessary and careless diversions of water. This is vital, because the Great Lakes are one of our greatest treasures, an important natural asset that must never be taken for granted, and that we must always protect. As a Member of the Judiciary Committee, I was proud to manage the House Floor debate on the Compact and would again like to thank Governor Ted Strickland for his work on this historic measure."Contact: Erin Donar at 202-225-3401 or Erin.Donar@mail.house.gov
