Sutton Calls for Swift Passage of Great Lakes Compact

Will play leading role in steering Compact through Congress

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Betty Sutton (D-OH) continued her push for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact by calling for its quick passage through Congress. The Compact will prevent unnecessary diversions of water from the Great Lakes, protecting this precious resource. Congresswoman Sutton is an original co-sponsor of this legislation.

"The Great Lakes are among our greatest natural resources and they must not be carelessly diverted. Lake Erie and our other Great Lakes not only provide recreation and fresh water, but are essential for our economy. The Great Lakes Compact will help ensure the safety of these great bodies of water, allowing local communities to utilize their resources for generations to come," said Congresswoman Sutton. "As a member of the Judiciary committee, I look forward to working with Chairman Conyers to steer this critical legislation through Congress.  I also want to thank Chairman Oberstar and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland for their leadership and dedication to the Great Lakes."
