Sutton Statement in Celebration of Earth Day

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Betty Sutton released the following statement today in celebration of Earth Day tomorrow:

"Earth day provides us with the opportunity to reflect on how we are treating our planet and allows us to renew our commitment to the preservation and protection of our natural resources. It is wonderful that so many of our youth are engaged in earth day activities, as it reminds us how important it is that we ensure our children and grandchildren have a clean world in which to live.

Right here in Ohio, we know that our national parks are one of our most precious gifts. Over 2.5 million people visited Cuyahoga Valley National Park last year, and it is important that we maintain this national treasure for millions more to see. Protecting and preserving our parks and other landscapes is not only significant as part of a larger effort to protect the environment, but they are vital educational resources in which our families can visit and learn about nature and wildlife. It is also crucial that we continue the fight to protect and restore our Great Lakes. These invaluable bodies of water are an essential asset for our families and our economy and are an integral part of our communities.

In addition, it is essential that we continue to pursue alternative and renewable energy sources. Investing in alternative resources will relieve the financial stress shared by working families in Ohio and will allow us to explore environmentally friendly energy options that will promote our energy independence. This past December, the House passed a groundbreaking energy bill that strengthens national security by lessening our dependence on foreign oil, reduces global warming, raises CAFE standards and creates hundreds of thousands of new jobs to strengthen our economy."
