Even before the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Senator Dodd was working to improve the safety and security of Americans. In 2000, he authored the FIRE Act, which has provided billions of dollars to thousands of cities and towns across America to train and equip firefighters. This law is providing significant new protections for Americans against the threat of terrorism, not to mention other man-made and natural threats such as fires, floods, and chemical accidents. He is also the author of the SAFER Act, which has provided additional resources to protect communities from the threat of terrorism. To date, the FIRE and SAFER initiatives have together provided almost $2.5 billion to over 20,000 communities across the country. Senator Dodd continues to lead the fight to strenghten our nation's homeland security. That includes offering legislation based on a bipartisan report of the Council of Foreign Relations to sharply increase the federal resources committed to homeland security efforts around our country.
