harkin announces usda loan of $225,000 for heartland power cooperative

Washington, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced a conditional commitment for a guaranteed loan of $225,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the Heartland Power Cooperative in Thompson.  The Rural Development funds will be used to acquire machinery and equipment necessary for a poultry processing and packaging facility in Stacyville.  The facility will process and market whole poultry and provide custom processing for regional producers, resulting in 15 full time jobs and 5 seasonal jobs.  The funding was administered through the Rural Economic Development Loan Program.

“The purchase of this building and equipment will improve the economic state of Stacyville and also provide custom poultry packaging and processing for regional producers,” said Harkin.  “Bringing new and innovative services to Iowa is all part of the community building process – a process that draws residents to our state and keeps them here long into the future.”

Harkin is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry.
