harkin announces $454,000 loan to expand hawkeye community college

Washington, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced a conditional commitment for a guaranteed loan of $454,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the Grundy County Rural Electric Cooperative.   The funds, part of a loan program so that rural utilities can assist in economic development activities, will assist in the construction of a 6,200 square foot building for Hawkeye Community College to use as a satellite campus.  The project will allow Hawkeye to create two new jobs, retain 383 existing full time employees and expand its programming to meet the needs of three rural K-12 school districts.  The funding was administered through the Rural Economic Development Loan Program.

“Rural economic development is what keeps our communities thriving, particularly during this economic downturn,” said Harkin.  “Hawkeye Community College is an excellent education facility and I am happy to see the growth of this facility to another campus.  This is a win-win for local education and for job creation and retention.”

Harkin is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry
