Moran Statement on Passage of Bill to End Iraq War

Washington, D.C., March 23rd - Congressman Jim Moran, Northern Virginia Democrat, issued the following statement regarding House passage of the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountability Act (H.R. 1591).  The bill passed 218-212 with one member voting present.

"Today Congress voted to set a withdrawal date for our forces in Iraq and end this misguided mission.

"When President Bush was asked how long the war will last, he said: 'We will be in Iraq as long as the Iraqi people want us there.'

"By contrast this bill says that we will be in Iraq as long as the American people want us there. The American people realize this is a war not worthy of the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform who are bearing the whole cost of this war.

"In four years over 2,000 U.S. children have lost a parent in the Iraq.  This bill is about saving more children from the pain of being told that their mom or dad isn't coming home.

"This bill will bring our troops home as soon and as safely as possible."
