Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Threatening a Women's Right to Choose

Washington, D.C., April 18th - Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, issued the following statement regarding today's Supreme Court decision that may take away a women's right to receive an abortion in the second trimester.

"The Supreme Court's new lurch to the right was felt today, and women and their doctors are the ones who will suffer the consequences.

"A women's right to choose is under attack. This ruling threatens the ability of women to receive an abortion during the second trimester, basically inviting states to experiment with laws that would unravel Roe v. Wade.

"Abortions should be safe, legal and rare.  The decision whether or not to have one should be left to the women and their doctors, not the will of ideologues."

By a 5-4 vote, the Court upheld a law passed by Congress in 2003 banning partial birth abortion.  The Court originally struck down the same law in 2000 because they determined it violated the landmark Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision.  This is the first time the Supreme Court has considered and ruled on a law banning a particular type medical procedure related to abortion.  Justice Sandra Day O'Connor leaving the Court last year and being replaced by Justice Samuel Alito has made the Court more conservative.
