Moran Statement on 4th Anniversary of “Mission Accomplished”

Washington, D.C., May 1st – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, issued the following statement today regarding the 4th Anniversary of the President’s “Mission Accomplished” speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

“Four years ago today, the President, traveling aboard a fighter jet, landed on the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier.  Donning a flight suit, acting every bit the part of a victorious Commander in Chief, he strode confidently to the podium under a banner of ‘Mission Accomplished’ to address the American people on Iraq.”

“For the President’s communications team it was the mother of all PR coups.

“Or so they thought.

“But the truth has a way of overcoming even the most elaborate spin.

“And it is deadly clear our mission in Iraq had not been accomplished.  In fact, it had only just begun.

“We just ended the most lethal month for U.S. troops in Iraq.  104 brave soldiers died during April, bringing the total of troops lost since the war began to 3,351.

“Polls show that the Iraqi people want us out and the American people don’t want us there.

“But President Bush is ignoring the will of both.

“Madame Speaker, its time to end this unjust occupation.  Let’s listen to the American people, turn Iraq over to the Iraqis and begin bringing our troops home.”
