Health and Education Projects Included in Omnibus Appropriations

Washington, D.C., December 18th – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, successfully included the following health and education projects in the FY’08 Omnibus Appropriations bill (HR 2764). The House approved the Omnibus bill late Monday night.  The bill will be sent to President Bush’s desk later this week, and he has indicated he will sign it into law.

“These funding initiatives are an investment in Northern Virginia’s health and educational infrastructure,” said Moran. “A community is only as strong as its underserved population. The aim of these projects is to provide all Northern Virginians the opportunity to grow up healthy, enrich their minds and have a fair shot at a fulfilled life.”

  • $335,000 to aid the new Automotive Training Institute in Alexandria in their efforts to recruit and train skilled automotive workers. The Institute is working to provide individuals not planning on pursuing a college degree, the opportunity to gain a skill set currently in high demand. The Institute is teaming up with the Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria Public Schools, and Alexandria Economic Development Partnership.

  • $143,000 for the Northern Virginia Urban League’s “Resource Mothers” program which promotes healthy pregnancy outcomes for mothers with limited support systems in Alexandria City and Fairfax County. The program will address issues related to teen pregnancy and infant mortality, and access for minorities to pre-natal health support services.

  • $143,000 to the Arc of Northern Virginia to create a “Disability Resource Mapping System,” accessible over the internet that will link people with disabilities to support services in their communities.

  • $67,000 for Marymount University’s Nurse Managed Care Program. The newly established program, housed at Saint Charles Borromeo Church in Arlington will provide screenings, referrals and health education to disadvantaged individuals, primarily from the Latino community, in a community-based, family-oriented setting. Nursing students from Marymount will assist in the providing of care, gaining hands-on clinical training.

  • $72,000 for the Beth El House located in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County to provide transitional housing and social services for homeless single mothers and their children working to become economically independent.

  • $364,000 for the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project at George Washington University. The Project is in the process of collecting, annotating and disseminating a documentary edition of Mrs. Roosevelt’s writings, before, during and after her time as first lady to the nation’s 32nd President.

  • $47,000 for the Network for Instructional TV in Reston. This pilot program was established to create online educational play activities for children from birth to age five that child care providers can easily administer. The program is based on the online, play based curriculum of PreschoolFirst, a tool that allows for assessment of activities. The program also plans to offer high speed internet access to approved child care providers.
