House Approves Moran Resolution Commending Darfur Activism

Washington, D.C., October 29th – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a resolution (H.Res. 573) authored by Rep. Moran which commends the efforts of advocacy groups for raising awareness about the humanitarian crisis and genocide in Darfur. The resolution further urges the U.S. to work with the international community to end the violence.  It was passed by a unanimous voice vote.

“The grassroots movement to end the genocide in Darfur did not begin in Congress or the White House,” said Moran.  “Rather it has grown from the concerns of American citizens, many of them high school or college age, who could no longer hear about the atrocities in Sudan and not act.

“Recently in my home state of Virginia, students from the New School of Virginia held a 3-day conference where they educated their peers about the genocide in Darfur.  I was so moved by their energetic commitment to justice and human rights that I invited them to Congress, where I hosted a meeting on Darfur at which they briefed Representatives on their efforts. These students asked poignant, pressing questions and their message was clear: help us save Darfur.

“Today, the House recognizes the outstanding work of these conscientious citizens and the advocacy groups they work for who, through their tireless efforts, have helped bring needed attention to the genocide in Darfur.  Their efforts reflect the true spirit of Americans, and bring hope to those facing such unimaginable atrocities.”
