Virginia’s 8th Ranked #1 in Govt. Funding

New website finds Moran’s district tops in govt. contracts, grants

Washington, D.C., December 14th -- Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat and senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced today that Virginia’s 8th Congressional District ranks #1 out of 435 districts in the amount of government investment over the past three years.

“Virginia’s 8th and Northern Virginia as a whole are integrally linked to the federal government,” said Moran. “Federal investment in our region is the economic driver.  We have a highly educated and motivated workforce; an atmosphere for innovation that makes our region fertile ground for government contracting and grants awards.”

From 2004-2007, a total of $60 billion in federal dollars was invested in Virginia’s 8th District, represented in the Congress by Rep. Jim Moran since 1990. This information has been made available through the launch of a new website www.USAspending.gov, which tracks government contracts and grants spending.

Established under the “Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006” www.USAspending.gov is required by law to be a single searchable website, accessible to the public. The website’s data was obtained from the Federal Procurement Data System, which contains information about federal contracts; and the Federal Assistance Award Data System, which contains information about federal financial assistance such as grants, loans, insurance, and direct subsidies.

In order to help contractors and local non-profits navigate the federal procurement and grant awards process, Moran hosts a biennial “Federal Procurement Conference,” in conjunction with George Mason University focusing on procurement for minority, veteran and women owned business and an annual “Grants Workshop for Non-Profits.” In addition, Moran pens a monthly “Moran Non-Profit e-News” email sharing best practices with local area non-profits.
