Telemedicine is a vital part of the Idaho healthcare infrastructure. Because many of Idaho’s citizens requiring health and medical services live in rural, isolated areas, it is imperative that we have an assistance program in place for those who need it. As United States Senator, I have proposed legislation that will bolster our telemedicine capabilities in Idaho and, through my membership in the Medical Technology Caucus, have been able to work closely with different groups to strengthen Idaho’s interactive medical technology. I have stated that telemedicine is extremely important in many rural areas of Idaho, and I am encouraged by congressional support of the cutting-edge technology that has been developed.

In 2005 I and several other congressional colleagues passed an amendment that provides $10 million for telemedicine programs and centers throughout the nation. I did this because I strongly believe that  a small investment in telemedicine will significantly improve the safety net for uninsured and underserved individuals living in rural Idaho.

I encourage citizens who are in need to take advantage of different telemedicine opportunities that are available, including medical image transmission, health advice via telephone and online health informational and educational services.
