Funding acquired by Nevada senator through Secure Rural Schools totals more than $5 million

Washington, DC – Communities and schools throughout rural Nevada will receive more than $5.4 million through the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) program that Senator Harry Reid led through to passage last year.

The Forest Service, which administers the SRS program, today released the funding to Nevada. The money will be distributed to counties throughout the state, helping out in this difficult economic period. Reid championed the bill reauthorizing SRS last September.

Payments help fund schools and roads and create employment opportunities through projects that maintain current infrastructure and improve the health of watersheds and ecosystems on national forests. Senator Reid used his leadership position to increase dramatically the amount of funding provided to Nevada's communities when the program was reauthorized in late 2008.

“I know all areas of Nevada are hurting right now, and they need this money,” Reid said. “This program, combined with the major increase in funding for rural counties that I delivered through the Payment in Lieu of Taxes program, will provide a stable source of income for our rural counties through the next few years."
