Congresswoman Hirono Nominates Students to Service Academies
WASHINGTON, D.C.—
Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono announced her 2008 nominations of high school students from the 2nd Congressional District to our nation’s service academies.
“I am honored to nominate some of Hawai‘i’s most outstanding students to our nation’s service academies. These students have demonstrated impressive academic accomplishment, great leadership potential and an interest in serving the country,” Congresswoman Hirono said.
There are five service academies. Three are within the Department of Defense: The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO; the U.S. Military Academy (Army) in West Point, NY; and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. The other two are within the Department of Transportation: the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.
The academies provide an excellent university-level education and preparation for leadership in their respective branch of service. Admission is considered a significant and prestigious accomplishment.
