Congresswoman Hirono Announces Federal Funding for the State of Hawaii’s Ongoing Implementation of the Adam Walsh Act
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono announced today a $300,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center, a division of the State Department of the Attorney General, in support of the implementation of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.
The funding, administered by the Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) office, will be used to enhance Hawaii’s sex offender registry as well as help with the enforcement of the program by making the sex offender information readily available to law enforcement agencies and the state attorney general’s office.
The Department of Justice grant will also promote the timeliness of the positive identification of a sex offender during the registration and verification process.
The stated purpose of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 is to protect the public, in particular children, from violent sex offenders via a more comprehensive, nationalized system for registration of sex offenders.
Established in the 1970s, the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center aims to provide the highest quality of identification services and integrated justice information in support of public safety for the people of Hawaii.
