Lautenberg, Menendez Announce $1.5 Million for New Ferry Terminals
Funds Will Create New Ferry Routes Between NJ and PA
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today announced the Federal Highway Administration has awarded more than $1.5 million in federal funds for the construction of two new, passenger-only ferry terminals to provide service between Camden, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania across the Delaware River.
“It is vital that we make reliable, alternative modes of transportation available to New Jerseyans,” Sen. Lautenberg said. “Providing commuters with smart travel options other than sitting in traffic goes a long way toward improving the environment and our residents’ quality of life.”
“The ferry link between our state and Philadelphia is a way of helping people get to work, reducing traffic congestion and keeping the economic engine of our region running,” said Sen. Menendez. “In these hard economic times, this project will not only be a source of additional jobs, it has the potential to spur commerce and entice area residents to use more public transportation.”
The Riverlink Ferry system, which is owned and operated by the Delaware River Port Authority, was granted $1,575,514 to create two terminals:
- The North Terminal, which will serve the Camden Riversharks Stadium, the Adventure Aquarium, the Nipper residential buildings, and various restaurants; and
- The South Ferry, which will serve the Battleship New Jersey and the Susquehanna Bank Center on the Camden Waterfront.
