Mazie Hirono stands by removing U.S. troops from Iraq, while visiting Middle East

HONOLULU (AP)—  Hawaii Congresswoman Mazie Hirono says she still wants U.S. troops withdrawn from Iraq.

Hirono is in Baghdad meeting with island soldiers and military officials. It was her first visit to the Middle East since being elected to office.

The Democrat says the violence has decreased and the Iraqi security forces are ramping up, so they should be able to protect the population on their own.

That means, she says, the U.S. should be able to bring troops home.

Hirono is leading a delegation of representatives from Virginia, Mississippi and California to obtain firsthand information on the progress being made.
