Tenant and Worker Ribbon Cutting
Alexandria Mayor Euille and Vice Mayor Pepper join the Congressman at the ribbon cutting. Congressman Moran obtained a federal earmark for the Tenants' and Workers' Support Committee to build a new community room in Arlandria.  TWSC is a local grassroots community organization which helps low-income, low-wage workers, among others, achieve social and economic justice.

Congressman Moran believes the labor movement is an essential tool to achieving social justice in the United States. By promoting fair working conditions for all, and upholding American values such as hard work and determination, labor plays an important role in the global economic market.

A friend of labor, Congressman Moran has demonstrated his strong commitment to the labor movement by supporting legislation such as the Employee Free Choice Act, which would allow workers to freely organize and bargain collectively. He strongly supports increasing the minimum wage and was a vocal supporter of Davis-Bacon protections for construction workers in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Bush administration, through its executive order power, had suspended the 1931 Davis-Bacon Act, which requires federal contractors to pay prevailing wages to construction workers. Under Congressional pressure from Congressman Moran and others, President Bush reversed his decision.

Locally, Congressman Moran has used his position on the Appropriations Committee to secure federal funding for labor-oriented social justice projects. In recent years, he has provided funding for the Tenants' and Workers' Support Committee, a local grassroots community organization which assists low-income, low-wage workers, and for the Lee-Fendall House in Alexandria, the former home of John L. Lewis, President of United Mine Workers and the founder of the Congress of Industrial Organizations. He has also supported job training and workforce development programs, such as the Alexandria Automobile Training Institute, which will provide automotive repair services to the greater Alexandria community while training skilled workers in automobile maintenance, sales and related occupations.

In the 111th Congress, Congressman Moran will continue to work with the labor community to grow, strengthen and better the lives of the U.S. workforce.
