As we reflect on the dangerous world that we live in, it is absolutely critical that we vigorously maintain a strong and uncompromising national defense. Currently, our Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan are engaged in a struggle that will determine the direction of the Global War on Terror and, ultimately, our safety here at home. During this time, I think that it is important to provide our troops with the necessary supplies and equipment they need to complete their mission. As a father of a former service member, I take this very seriously.
As we push ahead in Iraq, it is also very important to require increased responsibility both militarily and diplomatically of the Iraqi government. I believe it is vital that Iraqi forces take the lead in this mission. In doing so, they will continue to further secure their young democracy in a region that is extremely important to our national security.
I have visited with soldiers at Ft. Knox and Ft. Campbell in Kentucky and heard their stories. I have also spent time with troops in Iraq.
In Congress, I have consistently supported legislation and initiatives to give our troops pay raises, increases in education and housing benefits, and also help for their immediate families.
As we push ahead in Iraq and Afghanistan, I think it is important to address the needs of our veterans – both from the current conflict and past wars. I am committed to increasing benefits for Kentucky’s veterans. I will continue to support responsible funding for our military heroes.
Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have been a strong supporter of our military and I will continue to fight to support our troops abroad and our veterans at home.
