Alexander, Corker, Roe Announce Grant Funding To Aid Tennessee Fire Departments
Pittman Center Community Volunteer Fire Department in Gatlinburg Among Award Recipients

January 23rd, 2009 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and U.S. Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN 1st) today applauded the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) for awarding a $48,819 grant to the Pittman Center Community Volunteer Fire Department in Gatlinburg for operations and safety under the 2008 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.
The AFG program provides grants directly to local fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations so they can obtain equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

“This funding will allow the Pittman Center Community Volunteer Fire Department to improve service to the Gatlinburg area,” Alexander said. “I’m glad that the Department of Homeland Security has acknowledged the need in for this improved service and will continue to work to ensure that emergency responders and firefighters across Tennessee have everything they need to get their jobs done.”

“Firefighters perform a tremendous public service, and as a former mayor I know firsthand how important it is that they have the best possible resources,” said Corker. “This grant will help ensure that firefighters at the Pittman Center Community Volunteer Fire Department have the support they need to keep our families and our most precious resources safe from harm. I thank the Department of Homeland Security for its continued support of Tennessee’s firefighters and first responders.”

“I am pleased the Pittman Center Community Volunteer Fire Department will receive this important funding,” Roe said. “These firefighters and first responders put their lives on the line every time they go on a call. While the firefighters will be the direct beneficiaries of this funding, all of the citizens in Sevier County are the true beneficiaries of this grant. I want to thank Homeland Security for their continued support.”
