As part of restructuring, Howard Lee will resign as chair of State Board of Ed and become exec director of N.C.'s Education Cabinet.
Atkinson says the most important thing is to prepare children for the future. "I am pleased to join hands with Bill Harrison."
June Atkinson will continue as an ambassador for the public school system and lead a new task force on career development.
Harrison stressed not allowing kids to drop out of school. "It is a moral imperitive."
Harrison "thrilled at opportunity." He said, "there's no reason we can't have the best K-12 education."
Gov. Perdue says this is "the most important job in NC at this time."
Harrison has been superintendent of schools in Orange and Polk counties.
