WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, today announced the members and subcommittee chairs for the committee in the 111th Congress. Miller also welcomed the new members who will be joining the committee.  The Committee held its official organizing meeting this evening; the committee was also officially approved by the House of Representatives today.
“Both our returning and new members join us at a time when the committee’s work to rebuild and strengthen America’s middle class is critical,” said Miller. “With so many challenges ahead, their fresh ideas, energy, and diverse views will be crucial as we work to jumpstart our economy and improve the lives of America’s students, families and workers. I look forward to working with all our members and welcome them to the committee.”

Miller congratulated the subcommittee chairs for the committee’s five panels:

  • U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee (D-MI), Chair, Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education
  • U.S. Rep. Robert Andrews (D-NJ), Chair, Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions
  • U.S. Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), Chair, Subcommittee on Workforce Protections
  • U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX), Chair, Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness
  • U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), Chair, Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities
The new Democratic members of the Committee are:

  • U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH)
  • U.S. Rep. Pedro Pierluisi (D-PR)
  • U.S. Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO)
  • U.S. Del. Gregorio Sablan (D-Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands)
  • U.S. Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV)
  • U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY)

In the 111th Congress, the committee will be focused on rebuilding and strengthening America’s middle class by creating jobs, improving public schools, making college more affordable, restoring workers’ rights and protecting retirement savings. The Education and Labor committee has jurisdiction over a broad range of issues: pre-K through high school education; higher education; vocational and technical education and job training; workers’ wages and benefits; worker safety; and private pensions.
