Rep. Moran attending ceremony with Army Chief of Staff Eric Shineski and Steve Versace, brother of Rocky Versace, Vietnam Veteran from Alexandria who received posthumous Medal of Honor.

Representing the Pentagon and Northern Virginia's large military presence, Congressman Moran is a longstanding advocate for veterans, military retirees and their spouses. He believes that those who risk their lives protecting our country's national defense deserve the utmost respect and support from their government.

During his service in Congress, Representative Moran has successfully advocated to expand health care options for military retirees and opposed Bush Administration efforts to increase TRICARE premiums. In 2007, he worked with his colleagues to secure the single largest increase in funding ($3.7 billion) in the history of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Congressman Moran is also a vocal proponent of "concurrent receipt" legislation to repeal restrictions on military retirees who are eligible to receive VA disability benefits. He has also cosponsored legislation to eliminate the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) penalty for military retiree spouses who receive Social Security.

As a member of the Defense Appropriations Committee, Congressman Moran is working to address the needs of the new generation of veterans. More than 500,000 Americans have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of these returning men and women are suffering from physical and psychological injuries not encountered in previous conflicts. His legislation, the "Lane Evans Veterans Health and Benefits Improvement Act" (H.R. 1354), would mandate one-on-one post-deployment screening for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for all returning soldiers and expand their opportunity to receive further free health care screening. Congressman Moran is also author of the "Veterans Suicide Prevention Hotline" (H.R. 2219) which supports the creation of an independent prevention hotline for veterans staffed by veterans.

Through his seat on the Defense Committee, Congressman Moran has directed millions in funding for medical research focused on combat injuries. He has funded studies to research ways to protect and strengthen the bone health of our servicemen and women. In 2007, he worked with the Department of Defense and Northern Virginia Community College to develop programs that provide medical and rehabilitation training to wounded warriors.
