On Wednesday, January 14, I sat down with two officials from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), Gene Dodaro, Acting Comptroller General and Ralph Dawn, Managing Director of Congressional Relations.

You may be asking, “Why would anyone care about the Government Accountability Office?”

I’ll tell you.  The GAO is the principle accountant and watchdog of the United States Government.  Of all the agencies in Washington, DC, the GAO is the one that is always on the side of the taxpayers.  For instance, in 2008, the GAO saved the US Treasury nearly $60 billion.  This breaks down to $114 saved for...(more)

December 24, 2008

As I prepare my home for visiting friends and relatives, the thought hits me that we are blessed to live in an area of many riches.  Among them is the tremendous diversity of nationalities, ethnicities and religious faiths represented in each of our cities and towns.

At this time of year, regardless of our faith, while celebrating different holidays respecting different cultural traditions, we are nonetheless joined by the things we share in common.
The holidays, for all of us, are a time for family and friends; for charity and goodwill; for hope and reflection.

I have great hope...(more)

Leo J. Ryan Post Office Dedication

On Monday, November 17th, we had a beautiful ceremony to rename the Post Office at 210 South Ellsworth Avenue in San Mateo the “Leo J. Ryan Post Office”.  In response to your requests, here’s the text of my remarks at the ceremony:

I am happy to be spending this day with Pat and Erin Ryan. We heard them speak about how the world would be a better place if their father was still here. I have no doubt about...(more)

I’ve seen the future! (and I am encouraged)

In the last week of October, with leaves falling and wild swings in Northern California weather reminding me that winter is near, my heart was warmed and spirits lifted by visits to four places that offer good news for our country’s future. On Tuesday, October 28, I spent the morning at three innovative schools in the San Mateo - Foster City School District. At College Park Mandarin Preschool, I met some brilliant pre-Kindergarten children who were engaged in the same kinds of activities that other preschoolers enjoy - arts and crafts, singing, reading – except here, all of the instruction is...(more)

AIG and Congressional Oversight

On Tuesday, I was back in Washington for a hearing of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.  I had the opportunity to question executives of AIG (American International Group), our nation’s largest insurer who recently benefitted from an $87 billion investment from the United States Treasury. You can view my portion of the hearing by clicking on the video at the left of this webpage.  During the hearing, we learned that the company continues to pay $1,000,000 per month to a former executive who has been faulted with helping bring about the company’s downfall.  The official, Joseph Cassano, is the...(more)
