In the inaugural months of the Spirit of Idaho Award, I was able to recognize the efforts of three outstanding young men and a group of dedicated volunteers. It is my desire that the Spirit of Idaho Award become a way to highlight the good being done in each community in Idaho.

November 3, 2000: Alex Phelps, Jay Phelps and Kamrud Jacobson, Twin Falls. All three young men were newspaper carriers with The Times-News who provided quick assistance upon encountering a problem on their respective routes. Alex and Jay helped get medical assistance to an elderly woman who had not collected her daily newspaper. She had suffered a stroke and was unable to obtain help. On his paper route, Kamrud noticed smoke coming out of a vacant house and called firefighters, who prevented the house from burning down.
November 18, 2000: Winter Rec Coalition, Sun Valley. For efforts to create a collaborative approach for winter recreationists to work together.
