John Frost Nugent, served from 1918 to 1921

Idaho Senator Leonard Dirk KempthorneJohn Frost Nugent was born in La Grande, Union County, Oregon on June 28, 1868. He attended the public schools and worked in the mines in Idaho and Australia. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1898, and commenced practice in Silver City, Idaho. He served as prosecuting attorney of Owyhee County, Idaho, from 1899 until 1906.

He was appointed and subsequently elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James H. Brady. He served from January 22, 1918, until his resignation, effective January 14, 1921. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election to the Senate in 1920.

He served as the Chairman of the Committee on Fisheries (Sixty-fifth Congress). He was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson a member of the Federal Trade Commission in 1921 and served there until 1927. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1926 to the United States Senate.

He resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C. and died in Silver Spring, Maryland on September 18, 1931. He was buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
