Herman Welker, served from 1951 to 1957

Idaho Senator Leonard Dirk Kempthorne Herman Welker was born in Cambridge, Washington County, Idaho, on December 11, 1906. He attended public school and the University of Idaho at Moscow. He graduated from the law school of the University of Idaho in 1929. He was admitted to the bar in 1929, and served as prosecuting attorney of Washington County, Idaho.

He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1936, and practiced law until 1943. During the Second World War he served in the United States Air Corps from 1943 to 1944. After the war he returned to Payette, Idaho and practiced law from 1944 to 1950. He was also interested in farming and livestock raising in Idaho.

He was a member of the Idaho State Senate from 1948-1950 and was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1950. He served from January 3, 1951, to January 3, 1957. He was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1956.

After his service in the Senate, he engaged in the practice of law and farming. He died in the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, on October 30, 1957. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Fort Myer, Virginia.
