Congress Working on American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to Create Jobs & Boost Economy

Congress continues to work to address the economic crisis in a responsible, bipartisan manner. The House will vote this week on a bill that will create jobs and provide an immediate boost to our economy while also securing long-term growth.

See here for information on the impact of this legislation on Marylanders.

Congress Passes Emergency Economic Stabilization Act

Legislation Aimed at Stabilizing Economy

On Friday, October 3, the House passed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (EESA)- a bill designed to restore the flow of credit - the lifeblood of our economy - which is in danger of drying up. The aim is to help homeowners keep their homes, to protect retirement accounts, to help families take out the loans they need, and to keep small businesses alive and creating new jobs.

This action will help relieve the financial crisis and get the economy back on track, but it is only a first step.  Congress will hold hearings in the coming months and will work to enact long-term reforms.

Healthcare

The Census Bureau reported that nearly 45 million Americans, including more than 1 million Marylanders, were without any form of health insurance in 2003. In its Current Population Survey, during the same year, the Bureau reported the largest increase in the number of uninsured people in the past decade - an increase of 14.6 percent, or 2.4 million people, over 2002. Congressman Hoyer is fighting to make healthcare more affordable for all Americans, and is also fighting to protect funding for Medicaid, so that health care is accessible to more Americans.
