HEARING: The Impact of the Economic Crisis on the U.S. Postal Service
Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services and International Security
WASHINGTON – To examine how the current financial crisis is hurting business at the U.S. Postal Service, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) will hold a hearing at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, in his Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services and International Security.
The Postal Service has been hit hard recently by the economic downturn. Mail volume declined by nine billion pieces last year, and current projections point to even lower mail volume in the future. The Postal Service has indicated declines in mail volume will result in a $7 billion loss this fiscal year and another $1.5 billion loss in fiscal year 2010.
Sen. Carper’s subcommittee hearing will examine how changes in the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) could improve Postal Service operations so it can better weather the current economic downturn.

WHEN: Wednesday, January 28 at 2:30 p.m.
