Statement on Obama Administration Announcement on Emissions Waiver
Review

WASHINGTON
—U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) today made the following statement
reacting to President Obama’s announcement to revisit state emissions
waiver requests. “Since new CAFE standards passed Congress in late 2007, I have worked very hard to provide the support necessary for our domestic auto industry to be successful in meeting these new standards. I am proud to have authored legislation to provide $25 billion to retool manufacturing facilities to build the next generation of advanced energy vehicles here at home. As a member of the Finance Committee, I have helped lead efforts to create consumer tax credits for the new generation of electric vehicles, such as the Chevy Volt. In addition, I have and will remain engaged in providing emergency funds for low-interest loans to help our automakers restructure, save jobs and get through the global credit crisis. “The CAFE regulations passed over a year ago created an ambitious national standard for our automakers to achieve. A strong, national standard is what the country needs, not a confusing patch work of different state standards. It is critical, particularly now, with the global credit crisis, that our auto industry receive the support it needs to successfully meet this standard. As a new member of the Energy Committee, I will continue to lead efforts in the economic recovery package and in the broader energy debate to focus on advanced manufacturing technologies to create jobs in Michigan. “I look forward to continue working with the new administration to combat global warming, while ensuring that the next generation of advanced technology vehicles is built here at home.” – U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow |
