Maintenance of the road system supports agency goals by perpetuating safe and efficient access over existing roads. In urban interface and recreation areas, well-maintained NFS roads may support homeland security. The roads provide access for emergency responders and are sometimes the only escape routes for recreationists and local residents in the event of a terrorist attack, wildfire, or other emergency situation.
