Defense Science University Programs

Graduate Students at Cornell preparing a mica crystal x-ray spectrometer for an X pinch pulse on the XP pulsed power machine.A key strategy to ensure the long-term success of the NNSA mission and the Stockpile Stewardship Program in general is to maintain a high-quality workforce trained in the most up-to-date methods of modern materials science, physics, and engineering.  Consequently, the Office of Research and Development for National Security Science and Technology, Defense Science Division supports university partnerships in the field of experimental science. 

Currently, research is supported in the areas of fundamental materials science, high-energy density physics, and low-energy nuclear science.  University partnerships help to ensure a vigorous inflow of innovative scientific ideas and technical approaches by engaging the academic community in fundamental scientific aspects of stockpile stewardship.
