Wind Energy Program Announces New Funding Opportunities

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE’s) Wind Energy Program has announced solicitations for projects that will help lay the groundwork for the United States to generate 20% of its electricity from wind energy by the year 2030. These projects will address the technical challenges and market acceptance barriers to wind development that were outlined in the recent DOE report, 20% Wind Energy by 2030, and further defined in two Roadmap Workshops following up on the report.

The Wind Energy Program will issue the solicitations for projects as two announcements: a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) directed at industry partners, and a Program Announcement (PA) directed at DOE's national laboratories. The FOA will address six topic areas: (1) turbine research, development, and testing; (2) distributed wind technologies; (3) market acceptance efforts; (4) environmental research and siting strategies; (5) transmission analysis, planning, and assessments; and (6) workforce development. See the full text of the FOA on the E-Center Web site.

The PA for labs will address three topic areas: (1) wind turbine research and testing; (2) environmental impact; and (3) workforce development.  The PA is available on the E-Center Web site.

The solicitations were posted on December 30, 2008, and will close on March 3, 2009. The estimated total funding available for the parallel announcements is $9 million over two years. DOE anticipates awarding up to 39 financial assistance areements with individual award values up to $400,000.
