Lloyd C. Day was announced as Administrator of USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service by Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns on August 5, 2005. Day is responsible for a wide range of programs that facilitate the domestic and international marketing of U.S. agricultural products.
Day directs several marketing programs, including voluntary, fee-for-service, certifications of agricultural product quality, daily price reports on agricultural commodities in domestic and foreign markets; industry-funded, national research and promotion programs for over a dozen agricultural products; and regulatory programs that allow farmers to cooperate in the marketing of their products and ensure fair trading practices in the marketplace. He also is responsible for the procurement of commodities, including fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish and egg products, for the national school lunch and other federal food and nutrition programs.
Prior to his appointment to AMS, Day served as Special Assistant to the Administrator of USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service, where he was responsible for coordinating the Department’s Mexico-related activity in the areas of foreign trade, the environment, and the Partnership for Prosperity initiative established by President Bush and Mexican President Vincente Fox. He also served as point-person on high-priority U.S.-Canada issues.
From 1994 to 1999, Day served in a number of trade policy positions and eventually was appointed Deputy Secretary of the California Trade and Commerce Agency, where he managed five state-based offices and nine foreign offices to promote international trade and investment priorities for the State. From 1999 to 2002, Day was a business development director and industry marketing manager for Tumbleweed Communications Corporation in California. From 1992 to 1994, Day worked for the Governor’s Office of Community Relations, where he coordinated outreach to California’s Hispanic, European, and Native American communities.
A native of California, Day now lives in Alexandria, Virginia. Day has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Stanford University and also a master’s degree from Glasgow University in Scotland.
