Two NHEERL Scientists Recognized with Prestigious Awards

Gerald Ankley, Ph.D., a researcher at the NHEERL’s Mid-Continent Ecology Division in Duluth, MN, will receive the Founders Award from the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in a ceremony on November 16, 2008, at the annual SETAC North America meeting in Tampa, FL. SETAC is an international professional society with thousands of members involved in the study, analysis, and solution of environmental problems; management and regulation of natural resources; and environmental education. The Founders Award is a lifetime achievement recognition that has been presented annually since1980. It is the highest SETAC award and is presented to individuals with outstanding careers in the environmental sciences who have made clearly identifiable contributions to the field. Previous Founders Award recipients from EPA include William Ruckelshaus (1986), Donald Mount (1987), Samuel Karickoff (1991), and Glenn Suter (2004).

NHEERL Director Harold Zenick, Ph.D., recently was named an EPA 2008 Presidential Meritorious Executive Rank Award recipient. According to EPA Administrator Steve Johnson, “This is the highest level of performance recognition paid to career members of the Senior Executive Service, Senior-Level and Scientific and Professional corps. It involves a rigorous selection process, including Presidential approval, and the recipients exemplify the very best among the United States Civil Service. . . . Meritorious Executives are outstanding leaders who consistently demonstrate strength, integrity and a relentless commitment to public service. [They] are an integral part of the collective effort to protect the environment, safeguard public health and improve the quality of life at the Agency. . . . The Meritorious Executive award is given to leaders for sustained accomplishments.”
