USADF President Lloyd pierson travels to tanzania:

Visit Allows President to Spend Time with Several Grantees

WASHINGTON - December 12, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – December 12 , 2008 – The United States African Development Foundation’s (USADF) President, Mr. Lloyd Pierson, is currently traveling throughout Tanzania touring several USADF grantee projects. Arriving last night with plans to stay until December 13th, Mr. Pierson will meet with Ambassador Mark Green during his time in the sub-Saharan nation.

Before departing for his trip on December 6th, Mr. Pierson stated, “I am very excited to travel to Tanzania to meet some of our grantees and view their projects. USADF’s Tanzania team has diligently identified marginalized groups in the country and we will continue to identify and work with such populations”.

The USADF launched programming in Tanzania in 1986. The portfolio consists of 27 investment projects, totaling US$4.8 million in committed funding. One project in the portfolio which Mr. Pierson will visit is the Marvelous Flotea Company, a small enterprise that manufacturers tie dye and batik home textile products.

Other projects to be visited include Foot Loose Limited, who produces decorative home décor, the Tanzanian Organic Certification Association, which provides organic certification for more than 7,500 famers across Tanzania, and Natureripe Kilimanjaro Limited, a small enterprise that produces high quality mangos and cashews.

Mr. Pierson will also spend time at a former USAFG grantee, SERO Business Women Association (SEBA). Recognized as a successful grantee, SEBA is a micro-finance association that provides skills training and legal assistance to more than 2,000 women.

Mr. Pierson is due to arrive back in the Washington, D.C. area December 14th. During his weeklong trip to Africa, Mr. Pierson also stopped in Kenya and Rwanda.

The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) is a United States Government agency dedicated to expanding access to economic opportunity in Africa. Currently USADF operates in 20 African nations. Over the past 25 years, USADF has directly funded nearly 1,500 African projects representing in excess of $150 million in support of African enterprises and local African communities.
