The program fosters research that advances frontiers of knowledge, emphasizing potential opportunities and benefits and establishing the nation as a global leader in fundamental and transformational science and engineering.

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program has been successful in supporting basic research across fields of science and engineering. Independent assessments by external expert reviewers find that the program is effectively supporting research and education activities.
  • The program has been successful in achieving its program efficiency goal, which is to make decisions on 70% of proposals for research funding Foundation-wide within six months of proposal receipt.
