Health - Data Collection and Dissemination

AHRQ's Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), and Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) provide data, measures, surveys and software tools that allow users to analyze health care use, outcomes, safety, satisfaction, expenses, and insurance coverage.

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • By maintaining a centralized health database, the program continues to achieve wider access to effective health care services and reduce health care costs. Annually, it builds upon the number of partners contributing to the databases and the number of organizations using HCUP data or tools for quality improvement and impact.
  • The program has increased its CAHPS performance-based contracting to further improve its performance. Performance-based contracting emphasizes objective, measurable requirements and quality standards for how the work is to be performed.
  • Where feasible, the program must continue to work towards reducing the amount of time required to make MEPS data available to the public.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Increasing the breadth of data available by developing and placing in the public domain CAHPS surveys that will cover clinicians, nursing homes, and home health.
  • Increasing the breadth of data available by including data for children's use of preventive health services in MEPS' tables compendia.
