IDEA Special Education - Parent Information Centers

The Parent Information Centers program awards grants to provide training and information to parents of children with disabilities on how they can improve educational results for their children and on their legal rights and protections. The program also provides technical assistance to centers.

Rating

What This Rating Means

NOT PERFORMING
Results Not Demonstrated

A rating of Results Not Demonstrated (RND) indicates that a program has not been able to develop acceptable performance goals or collect data to determine whether it is performing.
  • The program has established performance measures to assess the quality, relevance, and usefulness of information provided by the centers to parents. But, the methodology for using data to determine performance has not produced consistent performance findings.
  • There has been no independent evaluation of the program's effectiveness. Such an evaluation is needed in order to gain information on how the program operates, its impact on parents and children, and how it can be improved.
  • Since the assessment, the program has established and collected data on two long-term measures dealing with training in scientifically- or evidence-based practices, and increased parent knowledge of rights and responsibilities.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Collecting and using data on annual measures dealing with the quality, relevance, and usefulness of the program to produce consistent performance findings.
  • Working with the Institute of Education Sciences to develop a plan for evaluating special education programs.
  • Assessing the data and methodologies used for annual and long-term measures to determine their reliability as indicators of performance.
