Transportation Security Administration: Transportation Security Officer Workforce

The program protects the flying public by preventing deadly or dangerous items from entering aircraft through pre-boarding security screening of persons, carry-on and checked baggage. As part of its operations, the program certifies security screening personnel stationed at more than 450 airports in the U.S.

  • The agency has made notable improvements in its management of the Screener Workforce since 2004, but more needs to be done to increase operational efficiency and screening effectiveness by improving the allocation of the workforce, including the methods used to determine the allocations, and developing more robust testing.
  • The agency's concept of operations for screening passengers and baggage was found to be adequate and generally well functioning, but remaining system vulnerabilities need to be eliminated in the near future.
