Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today told employees at a packed Headquarters assembly and at hundreds of work sites around the nation via satellite broadcast that he wants their help "to transform this Department from what is perceived as the Department of the West to the Department of All of America. Through our service together we can remake America and change our world,” the Secretary said, referring to President Obama’s statement that “this is a moment of opportunity for our nation; an opportunity to remake America; an opportunity to inspire a new ethic of public service.” more

Meets Interior Employees and Staff on First Day
Welcomed by a large crowd of employees this morning when he entered the Department of the Interior headquarters a day after his Senate confirmation, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar promised to bring positive change to what he called the “Department of America.” Secretary Salazar then joined President Obama and Vice President Biden at a formal White House swearing-in ceremony and, later in the day, met with the acting leadership of the department. "Together, all of us in this department, in its agencies and in its bureaus are going to be part of changing the world for the better," Salazar told Interior employees. “Fundamentally, the branding of this department will change because this is the Department of America, not the Department of the West,” he said, noting that the change would be evident in what the department does in historic preservation, in parks and conservation, and in helping build the nation’s clean energy economy. more

Ken Salazar, a fifth-generation Coloradan who served as the state’s U.S. Senator, Attorney General and Director of Natural Resources, was confirmed today by a unanimous vote in the U.S. Senate to become the 50th Secretary of the Interior. “I am honored to have been chosen for this position and look forward to working with President Obama on our nation’s energy and natural resource challenges,” Salazar said. “I will be a strong and forceful advocate for the wise stewardship of our nation’s land and water resources, I will help us build a clean energy economy for the twenty-first century, and I will work to restore the integrity of the nation-to-nation relationship with our Native American communities.” more
