The
Careful Country Teacher Kit is designed to help teachers,
parents, and other interested parties teach injury prevention
for rural and farm children. The contents of the Teacher's
Kit enables presentation of important safety information in
a variety of ways to accommodate individual circumstances
and presentation styles.
The
Teacher's Kit contains a copy of an 18 minute video entitled
Sawdust that is a story about a puppet by that name who learns
safety rules as he dreams about being a real boy. Sawdust
learns the importance of being safe while playing, riding
his bicycle, and when visiting his grandpa's farm. While based
on a rural setting, the video has valuable safety tips for
children of any background. To strengthen the message, the
video begins with a brief introduction by Elaine Scott, a
Mother from Blufton, Indiana who lost her son as the result
of a farm-related accident.
A sample
lesson plan is included. The lesson is designed to assist
presenters in planning their presentation and addressing the
most important safety concepts in a way that will be easily
understood by a group of young children. The lesson plan serves
as a guide and may be modified to suit individual needs and
circumstances.
A copy
of the recently developed Careful Country Farm Safety Coloring
and Activity Book is also included. Each picture or activity
in the book is based on information recently gathered about
frequent serious childhood farm-related injuries. The pictures
are arranged in order, beginning with the most frequent cause
of serious injuries to farm children, riding as a passengers
on tractors. At the bottom of each page is a Parent Alert
message that is designed to help parents become more aware
of childhood hazards. A message on the inside cover encourages
parents to take time with their children to discuss each of
the safety messages covered in the book. This book makes a
great give away at the end of child safety presentations.
The
Teacher's Kit also contains a fact sheet on childhood farm-related
injuries, camera-ready copies of the pages from the coloring
book that can be used to make handouts or overheads, and a
camera-ready copy of the Careful Country Safety Pledge.
